FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Harbinger is a multiplayer open-world survival game set in a post-apocalyptic world following a global war between NATO and the USSR in the 1980s. After the devastation of the war, an alien invasion takes place and decimates what was left of humanity.

The game emphasizes exploration and progression, offering a first-person perspective and what we call a ‘medium-core’ survival experience. The game focuses on core survival mechanics while providing a more forgiving gameplay experience compared to hardcore, punishing, or overly detailed survival games.

  • Harbinger has been in development since early 2018 when we began work on a project with just two full-time developers. Over the years we have hired a number of talented contractors, most of whom are still with us today. Since 2018, we have been operating in bootstrap mode with virtually zero resources, and remain as committed as ever to completing Harbinger and delivering the best survival game ever.

  • We outline many of Harbinger’s blockbuster features on our About page, including several unique and innovative elements within the survival genre. What truly sets us apart, however, is our approach to development.

Rather than reinventing the wheel with every feature, our focus is on thinking outside the box and infusing creativity into every aspect of the game. Instead of copying or rehashing successful elements from other games, we concentrate on developing original ideas and unique twists that make Harbinger stand out.

Our team is dedicated to exploring new ways to enhance gameplay, whether through novel mechanics, dynamic environments, or subtle improvements to classic features. Creativity drives us continuously.

For example, Harbinger features aliens instead of zombies or machines, deep and unique character progression systems that deviate from traditional talent trees, base systems centered around concealment rather than grid-based structure building, medium-core survival elements, and weapon progression mastery trees for every weapon. These innovations are crafted from the ground up to perfectly suit Harbinger and set a new standard in the genre.

GAMEPLAY FAQ

  • In Harbinger, you'll encounter a diverse range of alien species, many of which have multiple variants. Generally, these aliens rely on a telepathic form of echolocation to perceive their surroundings, compensating for their relatively poor eyesight. Additionally, many species possess exceptionally strong hearing, making them varied and formidable in different ways.

Some aliens are more intelligent, while others are more animalistic or monstrous. Some utilize advanced technology, such as energy weapons and high-tech full-body armor, while others forego technology altogether, relying on their finely tuned instincts and evolutionary advantages as hunters.

Our aliens are driven by an advanced AI behavior system that uses a conductor to periodically relay information to them. This ensures they can effectively hunt, taunt, and intimidate players, increasing the challenge, tension, and anxiety of the experience without feeling unfair.

These aliens are relentless hunters with the singular goal of culling all human life. Your mission is to analyze their behavior and patterns, fight back, and turn the hunters into the hunted.

  • Yes, there are NPCs such as traders that you can interact with in the world who are part of various groups including human resistance factions. Additionally, NPCs feature a reputation-based system that influences their interactions with players based on previous encounters and their history with them.

Harbinger does not include safe zones or settlements. Instead, survivors focus on concealment and staying under the radar to avoid alien threats. To find these NPCs, you'll need to explore the world and listen carefully to radio messages that provide clues to their locations.

  • Yes, but our system differs significantly from the grid-based structure systems found in games like Rust or the urban building claim systems. Instead, we feature a concealed campsite system that emphasizes creating hidden camps and structures. These concealed sites offer a range of benefits and functions, including storage, stealth, early warning systems, defensive structures, and traps.

  • Yes! Looting exotic alien equipment is a key endgame activity and a core RPG element in our game. You can loot aliens for a variety of items, including salvaged alien armor, technology, and body parts, which can be used in crafting or sold to NPC traders. Additionally, highly coveted and rare alien weaponry can be occasionally obtained from high-tier alien foes and used directly by the player.

  • We do plan on making it possible to salvage some equipment/items from Harbingers such as their armor and other items, we have discussed wanting to introduce lootable extreme rarity weapons from Harbingers and their technology also, however, we would also like to reassure you they would be introduced in an extremely limited and balanced fashion for fun purposes only.

  • Players can only log off after being out of combat for a short period. This prevents players from escaping combat scenarios and avoiding death by logging out. After logging out, a player’s body will remain persistent in the world for a brief period, leaving them vulnerable to other players and aliens. If you die during this time, you will respawn upon logging back in.

Once this period has elapsed, your body will disappear from the world and remain in sleep mode until you log back in.

  • Yes. Harbinger is progression-heavy, and we have carefully developed a wide variety of progression systems to ensure the game remains replayable, unique, and allows players to express themselves individually in a traditional RPG fashion. For more information about progression, check out our About section, and be sure to visit our social media channels for videos and content about these systems!

  • Yes, Harbinger is a very progression and RPG element-heavy game and features multiple extensive progression systems including character, class, and weapon-specific trees. For more detailed information please check out the about section.

  • You survive, and you learn to thrive. While Harbinger is a medium-core survival game, it remains cutthroat and intense. Players face constant threats from highly dangerous, intelligent alien life and potentially hostile other players, making survival a constant focus.

You will start in a random location with nothing but the clothes on your back. From there, it's up to you to decide where to travel and how to stay alive while gathering the resources needed to defend yourself.

Once your basic survival needs are met, you can explore a rich and immersive world, confront alien enemies, and delve into the extensive RPG mechanics integrated into the game.

Throughout your journey, you will meet new friends and make enemies—your path and playstyle are entirely up to you. If you love horror, exploration, and tension-filled RPG experiences, you'll find Harbinger to be a perfect fit.

  • Currently, we plan to include a variety of vehicles in Harbinger, including wheeled vehicles (cars, trucks, vans, etc.), motorbikes, bicycles, boats, helicopters, slow-flying light aircraft, and trains. More complex vehicles like helicopters, light aircraft, and trains will be developed later in our development cycle, with priority given to the other vehicles for early-stage development.

  • The game world features a vast array of usable items, including survival gear, food, drink, medicine, tools, construction supplies, weapons, and more. Additionally, there is a wide variety of junk items, ranging from toilet paper to military technology, which are either used in crafting or sold to NPC traders for various values.

Be sure to follow our social media channels and news page regularly to stay updated on the items available in the game, or check out our upcoming wiki for more information.

  • The game world extends 20x20km

² with the inner 16x16km² playable for a total of 256km² of playable area.

  • Harbinger is a persistent open-world experience with no loading screens once you have loaded into the game when moving between areas.

  • Yes. There is small-scale destruction of minor props, such as pillars and concrete barriers. However, it's important to note that not all items are destructible. This feature is primarily limited for performance reasons.

  • Dying in Harbinger is a semi-permanent and punishing experience. When you die, you lose all of the items your character had and will respawn with nothing but the clothes you were wearing. Your corpse will remain in the world for a short period, allowing other players to loot your items and giving you a chance to recover your belongings if you act quickly.

However, your character progression is persistent. You will never lose experience or progress, even through death.

  • Yes. We will fully support gamepad controllers, allowing you to play the game in whatever way you prefer. We will also ensure that both mouse and keyboard and gamepad inputs remain balanced by paying close attention to systems like aim assist.

  • There is a wide variety of weapon types available in-game, including but not limited to: pistols, rifles, submachine guns, machine guns, sniper rifles, designated marksman rifles, shotguns, melee weapons, throwable weapons, craftable weapons, and alien weaponry.

Players can find these items throughout the world, loot them from aliens, or craft their own weapons, such as bows and arrows, slings, or combining nails with bats to create a particularly vicious bat!

  • We believe many survival games focus too heavily on creating a punishing experience, which can often lead to frustration and tedium for players. In Harbinger, your character is relatively resilient and can survive for quite a while before facing issues like dehydration and hunger. While physical activity can accelerate these effects, you’ll primarily spend your time exploring the game world rather than constantly foraging for food and water.

Similarly, you won’t face fatal food poisoning from moldy fruit or typhoid from drinking pond water, nor will you need to manage bodily functions like waste or track electrolyte levels. There will be consequences for your survival choices, but they are designed to enhance immersion rather than create frustration.

  • There are currently no plans to develop other game modes for Harbinger. We have ideas for future modes that we believe could be fun, but we remain firmly focused on core development and delivering the best experience possible.
